How Long Is a 500 or 1,000 Word Essay?
A 500 word essay is about 1 page single-spaced or 2 pages double-spaced. A 1,000 word essay is about 2 pages single-spaced or 4 pages double-spaced. These are the common rule-of-thumb numbers for a 12 point font and 1 inch margins.
This guide shows how long an essay of 250 to 5,000 words is in pages, in paragraphs and in minutes, and what to do when a draft is over or under the limit.
How long is a 500 word essay?
| Measure | 500 word essay |
|---|---|
| Pages, single-spaced | About 1 (0.7 if the page is filled with text) |
| Pages, double-spaced | About 2 (1.3 if the pages are filled with text) |
| Paragraphs of 100 to 150 words | 4 or 5 |
| Time to read silently, at 200 words per minute | 2 min 30 sec |
| Time to read aloud, at 130 words per minute | 3 min 51 sec |
A 500 word essay is short. It has room for one main idea: an introduction, two or three body paragraphs and a conclusion.
How long is a 1,000 word essay?
| Measure | 1,000 word essay |
|---|---|
| Pages, single-spaced | About 2 (1.3 if the pages are filled with text) |
| Pages, double-spaced | About 4 (2.6 if the pages are filled with text) |
| Paragraphs of 100 to 150 words | 7 to 10 |
| Time to read silently, at 200 words per minute | 5 min |
| Time to read aloud, at 130 words per minute | 7 min 42 sec |
A 1,000 word essay has room for an introduction, a conclusion and five to eight body paragraphs, so it can develop three or four points with examples.
Essay length from 250 to 5,000 words
| Words | Pages, single-spaced | Pages, double-spaced | Reading time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 250 | 0.5 | 1 | 1 min 15 sec |
| 500 | 1 | 2 | 2 min 30 sec |
| 750 | 1.5 | 3 | 3 min 45 sec |
| 1,000 | 2 | 4 | 5 min |
| 1,500 | 3 | 6 | 7 min 30 sec |
| 2,000 | 4 | 8 | 10 min |
| 2,500 | 5 | 10 | 12 min 30 sec |
| 3,000 | 6 | 12 | 15 min |
| 5,000 | 10 | 20 | 25 min |
The pages follow the rule of thumb of 500 words per single-spaced page and 250 per double-spaced page. The reading time is the word count divided by 200 words per minute.
For any other length, divide the words by 500 for single-spaced pages and by 250 for double-spaced pages. An essay of 1,200 words is 2.4 pages single-spaced or 4.8 pages double-spaced, and it takes 6 minutes to read. Round up when you plan paper or printing, because a page that is started is still a page.
Why your essay may take fewer pages
The rule of thumb is a low estimate. When we measured pages filled with plain text in Times New Roman 12 with 1 inch margins, a single-spaced page held about 750 words and a double-spaced page about 380.
- A real essay sits in between. A title, blank lines, quotes and a last page that is half empty all bring the average down from the measured number.
- Font matters. Arial 12 is wider than Times New Roman 12, so the same essay takes more pages.
- Words are the fair measure. Two essays of four pages can differ by hundreds of words. That is why most limits are given in words.
The full measurement, by font and line spacing, is in the guide on words per page.
How to check the length of your essay
Paste the essay in the word counter. It counts while you type or paste.
| Number in the tool | What it tells you about the essay |
|---|---|
| Words | Whether you are inside the limit |
| Paragraphs | How the essay is divided |
| Sentences | Words divided by sentences gives the average sentence length |
| Reading time | How long a reader needs, at 200 words per minute |
| Most used words | Words you repeat too often |
Ask what counts toward the limit. The title, the footnotes and the list of sources are counted in some schools and left out in others.
What to do when the essay is too long or too short
| Too long | Too short |
|---|---|
| Cut the weakest point with its whole paragraph | Add an example or a piece of evidence to a thin point |
| Remove sentences that repeat an earlier one | Explain a step that you skipped |
| Replace long phrases: "due to the fact that" becomes "because" | Answer the strongest objection to your view |
| Shorten quotes to the words you need | Do not pad with filler words; a reader notices |
If you have to present the essay aloud, the guide on words in a speech turns the word count into minutes.
