What is small text?

Small text is text written with Unicode characters that are smaller than normal letters. The characters come from sets made for phonetics and mathematics, such as small capital letters and raised or lowered letters.

The size is part of each character. It is not a font setting, so the text stays small when you paste it in another app.

Features

  • Three styles: small caps, superscript and subscript.
  • One Copy button per style.
  • Live preview that updates while you type.
  • Works with pasted text up to 2,000 characters.

The three styles and their gaps

StyleExampleLetters it covers
Small capsꜱᴍᴀʟʟ ᴛᴇxᴛSmall letters a to z. Capital letters and digits stay normal. q and x use a look-alike
Superscript (raised)ˢᵐᵃˡˡ ᵗᵉˣᵗSmall letters a to z, digits 0 to 9, and all capital letters except C, F, Q, S, X, Y and Z
Subscript (lowered)ₛₘₐₗₗ ₜₑₓₜOnly a, e, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u, v, x and the digits 0 to 9

The gaps come from Unicode itself. It does not contain a raised or lowered form of every letter, so no tool can produce them.

Why the result may not look right

  • Some letters stay big. The style has no small form of that letter. Subscript has the most gaps.
  • Letters sit at different heights. The characters come from different Unicode sets, so some fonts draw them a little unevenly.
  • Empty boxes appear. The device or app that shows the text does not have that character. Small caps has the widest support.

Good to know before you use it

Screen readers often cannot read these characters as words, and search does not find text written with them. Use small text for decoration and keep important information in normal letters.
