What is a case converter?
A case converter is a tool that changes the capital and small letters of a text. It saves you from typing the text again when it was written in the wrong case, for example with Caps Lock on.
The words and the punctuation stay the same. Only the case of the letters changes.
Features
- Seven cases: uppercase, lowercase, sentence case, capitalized case, title case, alternating case and inverse case.
- Instant result that updates while you type or switch the case.
- Line breaks are kept, so lists and paragraphs keep their shape.
- Copy, select or download the result as a .txt file.
The seven cases
| Case | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| UPPERCASE | Makes every letter a capital letter | THE QUICK BROWN FOX |
| lowercase | Makes every letter a small letter | the quick brown fox |
| Sentence case | Capital letter at the start of each sentence, small letters after it | The quick brown fox. It jumps. |
| Capitalized Case | Capital letter at the start of every word | The Quick Brown Fox Of The North |
| Title Case | Capital letter on every word except short words such as a, of, the and to | The Quick Brown Fox of the North |
| aLtErNaTiNg cAsE | Small and capital letters take turns | tHe QuIcK bRoWn FoX |
| iNVERSE cASE | Swaps the case of every letter | tHE qUICK bROWN fOX |
In Title Case, the first and the last word of each line always get a capital letter. So does the first word after a colon, a dash, a question mark or an exclamation mark. The guide on how to capitalize a title compares the rules of APA, Chicago, AP and MLA.
Why the result may not look right
- Names lose their capital letter. In Sentence case the tool cannot know that a word is a name, so "London" becomes "london" in the middle of a sentence. Fix names by hand.
- Short forms change. "NASA" becomes "Nasa" in Title Case and Capitalized Case.
- Title Case differs from your style guide. Style guides such as APA and Chicago have their own lists of small words. This tool uses one fixed list of 18 short words. The guide on sentence case rules explains when each style is used.
- Nothing changes. Scripts that have no capital letters, such as Arabic, Hindi and Japanese, stay the same.
- The text stops growing. The box takes up to 100,000 characters.
