Fancy Text for TikTok and Discord Names
Fancy text can go in the name that people see, but not in the username. On TikTok that visible name is the nickname. On Discord it is the display name. The username of both apps accepts only plain letters, numbers and a few signs.
This guide gives the name rules of TikTok and Discord from their own support pages, shows where fancy text is possible, and explains how to add it without making your profile hard to find.
Username or display name: where fancy text works
Both apps give an account two names. One is a unique handle that makes up your link or tag. The other is a free name that is shown to people.
| App | Name | What it is | Fancy text |
|---|---|---|---|
| TikTok | Username | The @tag that makes up your profile link | No |
| TikTok | Nickname | The name shown in the feed, comments and messages | Possible |
| Discord | Username | The unique name of your account | No |
| Discord | Display name | The name other people see | Yes |
The reason is simple. A username has to be typed, searched and put in a link, so apps limit it to a small set of characters. A display name is only shown, so it can be freer.
TikTok name rules
These rules come from the TikTok Support pages on changing your username and your nickname.
| Username | Nickname | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 2 to 24 characters | Up to 30 characters |
| Allowed characters | Letters, numbers, underscores and periods; no period at the end | No list of characters is given; the name must follow the Community Guidelines |
| How often you can change it | Once every 30 days | Once every 7 days |
| Changes your profile link | Yes | No |
Because the nickname can be changed only once every 7 days, test the styled name before you save it. If it shows boxes on another phone, you wait a week to fix it.
- In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
- Tap Edit profile.
- Tap Name.
- Paste your styled nickname and tap Save.
Discord name rules
These rules come from the Discord Support page on usernames and display names.
| Username | Display name | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 2 to 32 characters | 1 to 32 characters |
| Allowed characters | Latin letters a to z, numbers 0 to 9, underscore and period | Special characters and emojis are allowed, also capital letters and non-Latin letters |
| Capital letters | No, usernames are forced to lowercase | Yes |
| Unique | Yes, no two users share one | No |
Discord states in plain words that you can use special characters and emojis for your display name. That makes the display name the right place for fancy text. The name must still follow the Community Guidelines of Discord.
How to make a fancy name
- Type the name. Open the fancy text generator and type your name.
- Pick a style. The page shows 24 styles. For a name, a clear style such as Bold, Sans-serif bold or Small caps reads best.
- Copy it. Press Copy next to that style.
- Paste it in the app. On TikTok paste it under Name. On Discord paste it as your display name.
- Check it on another device before you rely on it.
The limit of 30 or 32 characters is counted by the app. A fancy letter is heavier than a normal one, and an app may count it as more than one character, so a long styled name can be refused even when it looks short.
What to think about before you style a name
- People search for names. A search for your normal name often does not match the fancy letters. Your username stays plain, so people can still find you by it.
- Mentions use the username. The styled name is for show. The plain username is what people type to tag you.
- Boxes on old devices. A style your phone shows well can be a row of boxes on another one. The guide on why text shows boxes lists the safer styles.
- Screen readers. Software that reads the screen aloud cannot read most fancy letters, so a styled name may not be spoken.
- Community rules. A name that copies another person or a brand breaks the rules whatever the lettering.
A good compromise is a name with one styled word, or a normal name with a small decoration at the end. For Instagram, see the guide on the Instagram bio font.
Why the app refuses your fancy name
| What happens | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A username is refused | Usernames allow only plain letters, numbers, underscore and period | Use fancy text in the nickname or display name |
| The name is too long | The app counts fancy characters by its own rule | Style fewer letters or shorten the name |
| The name is saved but shows boxes | The device has no font for those characters | Choose Bold or another common style |
| You cannot change the name again | TikTok allows one nickname change every 7 days | Wait, and test before you save next time |
